Monte Ascensione
Mount Ascensione, from its height of 1,110 metres, dominates the landscape of the middle Aso valley with its grandeur. Its particular geology is characterised by high marine layers of breccia conglomerate and sand resting on clays and arenaceous tuffs. A pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, every May it comes alive with the feast of the Ascension, when the Madonna of Polesio is carried in procession to the church built on the summit.
The southern slope has vertical rocky spurs that overlook a natural spectacle of gullies, while from the summit there is a panorama that embraces the Sibillini Mountains, the Gran Sasso, the Maiella and the Adriatic. Due to its strategic position, the summit hosts numerous radio and television repeaters that create an alienating landscape.
